USCIS Announces New I-9 Form

USCIS announced on November 7, 2007 that a new version of Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, as well at the M-274, Handbook for Employers, Instructions for Completing the Form I-9, are available. For more information, employers can go to the USCIS Employer Information Section.

 

DREAM Act Test Vote Fails

Today, on October 24, 2007, legislation to give children of illegal immigrants a path toward legality (called the DREAM Act), failed a crucial test vote in the Senate.

Supporters needed to get 60 votes to advance the DREAM Act, which would have allowed illegal immigrants who plan to attend college or join the military, and who came to the United States with their families before they turned 16, to move toward legality. The final vote was 52-44.

Likely, this ends any hope for immigration legislation for this year.

CIS announces TPS Re-registration for El Salvador

On August 20, 2007, USCIS issued a USCIS notice extending the temporary protected status (TPS) designation of El Salvador for 18 months until 3/9/09. The current expiration date is 9/9/07. The notice also sets for re-registration and EAD extension application procedures. The 60 day re-registration period begins 8/21/07 and ends 10/22/07. The validity of EADs for Salvadoran TPS beneficiaries has been automatically extended for six months until 3/9/08.
